The Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services Department is a volunteer organization made up of 110 firefighters who all work together to create an efficient and high-quality emergency service. With a dedication to prevention, education, and emergency response, it is Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services’ goal to be high-performing, progressive, and visionary in the provision of emergency services within our community.

Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment FAQ's

- Our emergency response is comprised entirely of volunteer firefighters. What this means is that no career firefighters are staffing the stations at any time. When a call for emergency assistance occurs, firefighters are called, via pager, to respond to their assigned stations from their homes, jobs, or elsewhere, where they put their gear on and attend to the emergency in a fire apparatus.
- Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services operates 16 Apparatus out of five fire stations located in Old Town, St. Davids, Virgil, Queenston and Glendale.
Significant components of Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services' recruitment process includes:
1. Application submission
2. Application review, selection and notification for individuals selected to enter the hiring process
3. Written Aptitude Test – In Person
4. Panel Interviews
5. Candidate Physical Ability Testing
6. Conditional Offer of Employment

Relevant certifications would include, but are not limited to, certificates that relate to NFPA, first aid, CPR, vehicle mechanics, plumbing systems, building construction, heavy equipment operation, electrical systems, workplace safety training, radio/telephone communications, electronic systems, coaching or teaching.

Station Locations

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services consist of five stations, 110 firefighters and 16 apparatus.

Located at 22 Anderson Lane, Fire Station 1 primarily serves the urban area of Old Town. This area features the Town's historic downtown, a large residential zone, and several large hotels and wineries. The historic downtown area is one of the main tourist attractions within the municipality. The station, built-in 2001, is approximately 10,000 ft² and has three drive-through apparatus bays.
The apparatus located at Station 1 include:
- 2010 Spartan Pumper (Pump 1)
- 2017 Ford F-350 Squad (Squad 1)
- 2020 Rosenbauer 101’ rear mount platform (Ladder 1)
- 2022 Freightliner Tanker (Tank 1)

Located at 745 Warner Road, Fire Station 2, built-in 1984, serves the urban area of St.Davids and surrounding rural areas. The area served by this station is primarily residential, surrounded by agricultural land. Fire Station 2 responds to incidents along the 400 series highways stretching across the municipality's southern boundary. The station is approximately 7,000 ft² and has three bays with one drive-through bay

Located at 1391 Concession 6 Road, Fire Station 3 was built in 2008. Located within the urban area of Virgil, the area served consists of a mix of residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural uses. The station is approximately 10,300 ft² with three drive-through double-deep apparatus bays.

Located at 5 Dumfries Street in the urban area of Queenston, Fire Station 4 was built in 1977. Queenston is primarily a residential area with some agricultural land surrounding it. Fire Station 4 is approximately 5,200 ft² with two apparatus bays.

Located at 350 Townline Road, Fire Station 5 serves the Outlet Collection Mall, Niagara College campus, White Oaks Resort, other hotels, light industry/commercial developments, and dense residential development. This station also serves segments of a 400-series highway. Built in 2005, this station is approximately 9,000 ft² with three double-deep apparatus bays.
- 2007 Spartan 105’ rear mount (Ladder 5)
- 2022 Spartan Metro Star Rescue Pumper (Rescue 5)
- 2022 Freightliner Tanker (Tank 5)

Open Air Burns

Permission to burn outside the urban boundary will be provided on an annual basis and can be processed through an online fillable form on the Town’s website.

In the event the applicant does not have access to the online form, the applicant can call the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake Customer Service Department or Fire & Emergency Services at 905-468-3266 prior to having a controlled open-air burn. (Offices are open Mon. to Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Residential burning is not allowed.

Residents are reminded that contravention of the Municipal Open Air Burn Guideline can result in cost recovery by the Fire Department in accordance with the Fee Schedule.
