UPDATE FROM NIAGARA REGION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Niagara Region's Director of Economic Development attended the March 28 Council meeting. The Director's presentation provided an overview and update on the Team Niagara Economic Development Action Plan for 2015-2018, which was supported by all 12 municipalities.​ The Action Plan is available on the Niagara Economic Development website.

PROVINCIAL SERVICES IN
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

A Constituency Assistant to MPP Wayne Gates attended the March 28, 2016, Council meeting to advise of the provincial services and assistance the MPP's office is providing to Niagara-on-the-Lake residents. Their office is located at the NOTL Public Library and open to the public on Fridays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (except between 12:30 and 1:30) or by appointment when needed. Residents may also contact their office at 289-241-2238 or wgates-co@ndp.on.ca.

SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING
Heritage plaques and commendation certificates were presented at a Special Council meeting on March 7, 2016, to recognize community members who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of historical property.

Heritage Designation Plaques under the Ontario Heritage Act were presented to:

  • 87 Ball Street - Drew and Sindy Chapman
  • 421 Hunter - Jens Ramputh​
  • 240 Centre Street - Lloyd Kelley
  • 233 King Street - Olde Niagara Fire Hall Inc.​
  • 175 Regent Street - Brandon Tataryn and Amanda Terry


Peter J. Stokes Heritage Commendation Certificates were presented to the owners and contractors of:

  • 83 Gage Street for Restoration & Renovation
  • 223 Gate Street for Restoration & Renovation​
  • 214 Four Mile Creek Road for Renovation & Maintenance
  • 323 Mary Street for Good Compatible Design​
  • 1126 Four Mile Creek Road for Maintenance

At its March 28, 2016, meeting, Town Council approved:

Tender of $256,550.83 from 
Norjohn Contracting Paving Co. for the 2016 Hot Mix Asphalt contract.​

Tender of $347,862.10 from C.R.L. Campbell Construction and Drainage Limited for the replacement of a concrete box culvert on Concession 2 Road, also known as Bridge No. 6.

Tender of $292,875.00 from Brennan Paving Limited for Queenston Road Rehabilitation from Concession 6 Road to Concession 5 Road.

Items postponed at the March 28, 2016, Council meeting:

The revised Draft Plan of Subdivision for Concession 4 Road, "Woodcastle Acres," was postponed until the next Council Meeting of April 18, 2016, in order for further dialogue to continue between the developer, residents and Town Staff.

Council referred the request from the Agricultural Committee to not support the RAMSAR designation to the Director of Community & Development Services to be brought back to Council at the appropriate time.
FACILITY RENTALS
Facility rentals can now be requested online. Visit the Town's website to request a location for your next meeting or event.
NEW eSERVICE FOR TAX BILLS
The Town has introduced a new electronic service known as “eSend.”  By enrolling in this new program, you will receive your property tax bills and notices via e-mail. It’s easy to sign up. Simply click on the Property Taxes page of the Town's website and fill out the registration form. Please include only one e-mail address per property.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
 
 
  NIAGARA COMMUNITY DESIGN AWARDS - The 2015 awards presentation was held on March 2, 2016, to recognize and celebrate excellence in design in Niagara region that demonstrates the application of Smart Growth Principles. The Settlement Townhomes in St. Davids received honourable mention for Small Budget in Architecture, and the Walker Living Campus at Woodend was the award recipient in the Sustainability category.  
 
CUVÉE 2016 - The 28th annual Cuvée Grand Tasting, organized by Brock University to celebrate excellence in Ontario winemaking, was held on March 4. Award recipients included Howard and Wes Lowrey from St. David’s with the Cuvée Vineyard of Excellence Award for best red vinifera, and local winemaker and consultant, Peter Gamble, received the 2016 VQA Promoter Award in the Lifetime Achievement category.

NIAGARA PUMPHOUSE ARTS CENTRE - The Pumphouse is holding an opening reception on Sunday, April 3, at 2:00 p.m. for Entro, an exhibition of paintings by Susan Lott.  Spring art classes for children and youth will begin in April.
